Calling 911 in the Woods

That would be nice. Thing is, if you need them right now it's too late for a phone call. Brigid has a post up on her walkabout carry rig, a Sig P220 in a Blackhawk SERPA holster.

Some trainers don't allow you to use a SERPA holster in their courses. The theory is that the trigger-finger release lever translates into trigger-finger on the trigger. Which translates into accidental discharge.

I don't have a problem with the SERPA, and use it for open carry. As I've said earlier, I prefer a hybrid holster for concealed carry. Any thoughts on the SERPA? Anybody else see a safety issue with it?

  1. No issues in pistol training or competition. I have not tried Force on force training which has a higher stress level.

I like the Serpa system, train with it and have a high confidence level in my ability to operate it.

  2. Since the release lever isn't in the same relative position as the trigger, and in fact encourages you to index your finger along the gun frame properly, I'd say folks that think it puts your finger on the trigger are either ignorant of how the holster works, or are training incorrectly.

Which makes me wonder why they're trainers to begin with.

  3. The last time I was at a pistol school we had two people AD, fortunately with no injuries. Both had SERPAs and the school decided right then and there no more, ever.

For a tactical holster I use a Safariland. I'd prefer to shoot with my EDC holster (which changes from time to time) but most schools won't allow you to if you are wearing a vest.
